About the Attraction

Vardzia is an ancient cave city located in the southern region of Georgia. It was carved into the cliffs of the Erusheti Mountain during the 12th century, under the reign of Queen Tamar. Queen Tamar was one of Georgia's most powerful and influential rulers, and her reign is considered a golden age for the country. Vardzia was built as a fortified
monastic complex and served as both a religious retreat and a strategic stronghold. The site consists of around 600 caves, including dwellings, churches, and storage areas. Visitors to Vardzia can explore the narrow tunnels and stairs that connect the caves, marvel at the ancient frescoes that adorn the walls of the churches, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Today, Vardzia is a UNESCO
World Heritage site and a popular tourist attraction, offering a fascinating glimpse into Georgia's rich history and cultural heritage,
especially during the remarkable era of Queen Tamar's rule.
